Hello, Barbara. It was very good of you to go to so much trouble to help me.
As to the various printings of the Christ Church Register, I believe that the copy I use, which was printed in 1990 by the Clearfield Company, probably is an exact copy of the original 1897 book and index. I have seen a revised index, which probably was printed by Southern Historical Press in 1988. I don't know if the entire book was printed by SHP at that time, or just the index. The index was compiled by the Blue Ridge Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the Preface states that this index contains more than 1,200 names that had been omitted from the index of the 1897 edition. It also includes approximately 4,000 slaves. I have used this revised index, and it also is flawed. It's been so long since I used it that I cannot say that it is badly flawed, or just a bit flawed. I simply don't remember, but I will urge researchers to use every index they can find when looking for people in this treasure of a book.
In 1993, beginning with Volume 1, Number 4, and continuing through Volume 2, Number 3, the quarterly, _Tidewater Virginia Families_ published some Christ Church records. The article begins by describing where these records were found. They were found inserted in the back of an 1897 edition of the transcription of the register; the copy held by the Urbanna Public Library. Then, it says, "In so far as has been determined, these names, or at least the majority of these names, have not been included in any of the published transcriptions that are available." Most of the records published in this quarterly are for the 1750s and into the 1760s.
I think that I probably have most, if not all, the CC records available on the numerous families I've researched there, but I do very much appreciate your posting the information you have and offering to look things up for me. Thank you very much.
Mary Gregg
