The News Messenger (Christiansburg) may have covered it. Issues from that time period are available on microfilm at Newman Library at Va. Tech in Blacksburg. If you find nothing there, you might want to check the Pulaski papers (I'm not familiar with those but you may be able to find something about them on the Pulaski Co Genweb site) or even the Roanoke Times. I know the Roanoke paper covered New River Valley events when I was a kid, but I don't know if they covered them in the 40's. You should be able to find Roanoke papers from that time period also at Va. Tech, or the Main library on Jefferson St. in downtown Roanoke has them, and I believe the Salem lbrary does, too.
