I am trying to connect to anyone who is researching the HATFIELD, BRUMFIELD, PRICE, or SNIDOW families of Montgomery Co., VA. I just got back from Virginia where I went to the Library of Virginia. I found the following pages in a book on the shelves in the Collections Department. Militia of Montgomery County, Virginia -- 1777 - 1790 Compiled by Mary B. Kegley (no date) Pg. 2 In 1781, Abram Trigg, Frederick Edwards, and Samuel Ewing were appointed captains, with Ewing to replace Peirce (Pearce) who was about to leave the county. The territory of Montgomery County became large enough at this time to warrant a division of the county into two battalions, numbered first and second, and sometimes known as "the Upper and Lower Battalions." In 1781, Major Cloyd became lieutenant colonel of the first battalion with Daniel Trigg as major. Jehu (sometimes erroneously called John) Stephens became colonel in the second battalion, with John Taylor as major. Several new captains were appointed in the same year: John Montgomery replaced Jeremiah Pierce, removed, Andrew Hatfield recommended to replace John Lucas, removed, and ...... Pg. 3 -- "It was the unanimous opinion of the officers that 200 men be permitted to be "drawn out" by the Governor for the defense of the frontier, and to be sent to the following districts: (District names are listed.) Pg. 21 -- A list of Captain John Lucases Company (I only listed names pertinent to my research.) Andrew Hatfield Christian Snido Isaac Hatfield Jacob Snidow Umpry Brumfield James Brumfield NOTE: The captain excused, living in Botetourt. Jos. Lucas, "I believe under eighteen." The last four names Hatfield, Snidow, McKinsey, and Burk are under eighteen.) -- The Hatfield this is referring to is Isaac Hatfield and Jacob Snidow. (There was a Anna "Anny" Brumfield (daughter of James Brumfield) who was married to William L. Hatfield (b. 1767 Loudon Co., VA) Pg. 22 -- A list of Tiths in Capt. John Lucases Company of Militia (I'm only listing here three of the names) John Lucas, Capt. (deleted) Andw. Hatfield Christian Snidow (could this be a relative of his wife Christina Snidow??) Humphrey Brumfield (grandfather of Susan F. Brumfield who married John Hatfield (b. 1796 in Mont. Co., VA) NOTE: This is a list of "tiths" or Tithables, persons who are male over sixteen who pay taxes. This list, signed by William Preston, is used for comparison with the Lucas list on the previous page. Pg. 57 Robertson's list continued: Andrew Hatfield Umphrah Brumfield (probably should be Humphrey) Montgomery County Virginia - The First 100 Years - Text by: Judge C. W.
