Kern or Curn or Currin - family lore

Hello,

There is some family lore passed down about my third great-grandmother, Lois M. Damron Anderson. It was said that she was in love with and going to marry somebody by the name of Kern. During the Civil War he temporarily deserted the Confederate Army and went to see her. He was late coming back to the train and had to run to catch it. He grabbed a rail, his hand slipped and he fell onto the tracks. He lost a leg and died. Lois was heartsick about it and never really got over it.

Does any body have a similar story that they've heard.
Thanks
