I'll try to lead with some specifics, to weed out any confusion. This Nathaniel Fitz was definitely present in Norfolk, VA, between 1810 and 1820. He is thought to have died there around 1820--his deed activity abruptly stops. His census record suggests he was around 26, poss. younger, in 1820. He left a wife, Lydia Billups Fitz, and at least one child, Sarah Ann Fitz. Sarah Ann Fitz was married to French immigrant Jules Auguste Morein in 1834, in Norfolk. The obit for Sarah Fitz Morein in 1905 mentions that her father Nathaniel was a merchant of some reknown in early 1800s Norfolk. The 1820 report also shows an older male, around 20 yrs older than the oldest female, suggesting the father of either Nathaniel or Lydia.
I know nothing of Nathaniel's background, and to date I've not found any other Fitz records from Norfolk in the same period. His widow Lydia Billups Fitz was most likely attatched to the large Billups clan in Mathews Co., VA, just up Chesapeake Bay from Norfolk. Her tombstone suggests that George and Ann Billups were her parents. It is the Fitz line here, though, that intrigues me.
