Hi Laura,
I'm just venturing a guess but I would say on the bay side where the waters were calmer, specifically Occohannock River or creek (that's in between Northhampton & Accomack). You'd have to look at a period map to get the original names of the rivers/creeks.

I thought I read somewhere that the Occohannock was one of the deeper waterways on the eastern shore. I know that Col. Edmund Scarborough had whole or part interest in several ships and he lived on the Occohannock.

This is just a guess.
