I believe Thornton Bowman was erroneously listed as Thorring Bowman in Patrick Co VA in the 1840 US census. This error was compounded by the transcriber misreading Thorring as Shorring.
Below is my transcription of an 1840 Patrick County Deed record in which Aaron Bowman, Thornton Bowman and Roland Bowman jointly mortgage three tracts of land.
A Patrick County death record for Aaron identifies Roland as a son.
The jointly mortgaged property abutted properties of persons listed with Roland Bowman and Thorring (sic) Bowman in the 1840 US census for Patrick County.
Together these facts suggest to me that Aaron was also father of Thornton.
Deed Book 10 p 412 Aaron Bowman, Roland Bowman, Thornton Bowman to Thomas M. Clark 6/1/1840
This indenture made and entered into this 1st day of June in the year 1840 between Aaron Bowman, Roland Bowman, Thornton Bowman of the county of Patrick & state of Virginia of the first part, Thomas M. Clark trustee of the second part and A. Staples of the came county & start of third part. Witnesseth that the said Aaron Bowman, Roland Bowman, Thornton Bowman for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to them in hand paid by the said Thomas M. Clark but more especially to secure unto the said A. Staples the sum of three hundred dollars current money due 20th December 1839, doth grant, bargain and confirm unto the said Thomas M. Clark his heirs or assigns the following land & property trust one tract or parcel of land lying & being in the county of Patrick on the headwaters of Arrarat containing fifty six acres more or less and bounded as follows, beginning at a chestnut in Bells order line
N77W 72 poles to a white oak
N34W 28 pole to a poplar
N12_E 56 poles to a hickory
N62_E 36 poles
S21E 102 poles to a poplar
S55E 24 poles to a hickory
S6_E 28 poles to a poplar
S51W 30 poles on said order line near a branch the same
N69W 56 poles to the beginning.
One other tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Patrick on Arrarat river containing 180 acres more or less bounded as follows (to wit). Beginning at a red oak corner of Bells order running with the said order line

S53 E 10 poles to a gum Samuel Cannon’s corner thence running said Cannon’s line S19E 100 poles to a Spanish oak

N10E 140 poles to a chestnut in the old line thence with said order line

Also one more tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Patrick containing 21 acres be the same more of less and bounded a follows to wit Beginning at a dog wood in Bells order line thence with the same

S36E 70 poles to a hickory
S76E 36 pole to a chestnut in said order line thence with said

also the following property trust 6 beds & furniture & 6 steads including domestic blankets and bed quilts. *** mare aged 5 years raised by R. Bowman 8 milch cows & 5 calves 4 heifers & 2 steers marked with 2 crops and a slit on the right ear & smooth crop in the left & swallow fork in the *** ear. 40 head of hogs marked as above 14 head of sheep 1 common cupboard three tables 14 chairs and all the rest of the household furniture & tools Plantation utensils & etc. To have & to hold the said land and property to him the said Th. M. Clark his heirs & assigns forever, and the said Aaron, Roland & Thornton Bowman doth for themselves their heirs & assigns forever warrant and defend a good and perfect right and title unto the said land & property to him the said Th. M. Clark his heirs & assigns in trust. Nevertheless the said Th. M. Clark shall permit the said Bowmans to remaining possession & use of the aforesaid land & property until the first day of January next and ever thereafter until the said A. Staples shall direct him the said Th. M. Clark to sell the said land & property then upon the said Th. M. Clark being so directed he shall proceed to sell at public auction at the house of said Bowmans by previously advertising the time and place at Patrick Court House at least ten days thereto, all of the land and premises aforesaid or as much thereof as will be sufficient to pay the said debt with legal interest thereon and the cost of ***** this deed of Trust, and out of the proceeds of said sale to pay & satisfy the debts aforesaid with the interest & cost unto the said A Staples and the surplus if any restore to said Bowmans their heirs or assigns. And for themselves the said Aaron Bowman Roland and Thornton Bowman shall will and truly pay and satisfy the said debt with the interest & costs accruing thereto then this deed of trust shall be null and void else to remain in full force & virtue. In testimony whereof the parties have hereunto set their hands & affixed their seals the day & date above written
