I believe Thornton Bowman was erroneously listed as Thorring Bowman in Patrick Co VA in the 1840 US census. This error was compounded by the transcriber misreading Thorring as Shorring. Below is my transcription of an 1840 Patrick County Deed record in which Aaron Bowman, Thornton Bowman and Roland Bowman jointly mortgage three tracts of land. A Patrick County death record for Aaron identifies Roland as a son. The jointly mortgaged property abutted properties of persons listed with Roland Bowman and Thorring (sic) Bowman in the 1840 US census for Patrick County. Together these facts suggest to me that Aaron was also father of Thornton. Deed Book 10 p 412 Aaron Bowman, Roland Bowman, Thornton Bowman to Thomas M.
