MOFFETT/MOFAT/MOFFIT Family of Pr.William Co., VA. I am looking for the origins of "WILLIAM MOFFETT", who used (or was given the title) of "Reverend", likely as a "lay" minister by the "vestry" of whatever small congregation he preached to on Sundays there in rural, Colonial Northern Virginia in the 1770s. His likely date of birth would have been about 1725, and he may have been born or lived in Western NJ and then migrated south with many others in search of available, cheap land. We was known to have been married, but the identity of his spouse is unknown. He also had one daughter, SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT (the spelling varies) born in about 1748, who in about 1772 married the Rev. DANIEL HOFF (1746 Raritan, NJ - 1802 Pr. Wm. Co., VA), who had moved there in ~1770, was also "lay" minister and a widower with 3 sons. SUSAN eventually bore him some 7 known children before DANIEL died in 1802, at age 56. The collecive families, including WILLIAM MOFFETT all migrated to Washington Co., OH in about 1805 (where WILLIAM reportedly died in about 1808). This ended the nexus of this family with Prince William County. Daughter SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT HOFF, widow of Rev. DANIEL HOFF, having made the move with all her children to Ohio in 1805 lived on until 1819, when she died there in Lawrence Twp., Washington Co., OH. SUSAN & her father may be buried in either the DYE Cemetery in Lawrence Twp., or in Mound Cem. in unmarked grave locations. I am interested in learning the family origins of WILLIAM MOFFETT (Rev.) and his daughter, SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT HOFF, which may begin there in Pr. William Co., VA or could begin in Hunterdon Co., NJ and involve a move south in sometime about 1750-70, as did the Rev. DANIEL HOFF and others from NJ. Anyone with info, pleaqse contact me directly: JOHN SCOTT HOFF, 20 S. Clark St., #2210, Chicago. IL 60603 (312) 346-8111. Notify Administrator about this message?
