I have been reviewing my records for the family of Simeon Van Winkle (son of Simon Jacobsen) who married Pyntje Van Giesen. I have three children: Rachel (1727), Jannetje (1728), and Helena (1730). The date of their marriage in my records is 5 June 1728, which is obviously incorrect as Rachel was born in 1727. Another source gives a marriage date of 9 October 1725 which would fit. However! Pryntje was born in 1692 and that would make her 35 years old when Rachel was born. Now this was approaching 300 years ago and times then were different than today for beginning families. In Robert G. Clark's "Early New Netherlands Settlers" for the Van Winkle family he indicates that Simeon had 15 children with his marriage to Pryntje. However, there are some problems with this one, where he gives a marriage date of 19 September 1696, and with the first born being Abraham in 1711. But wait a minute! This marriage date of 1696 would have her married at age 4!! Talk about robbing the cradle. However, the date of birth for this Abraham would fit in correctly as she would have been 19. I gather that most of the children would have been baptized at Acquackanonck, but I don't have those records in front of me. John Minke Carmichael, CA Notify Administrator about this message?
