Union Cemetery, Section 31, Lockridge Township, Jefferson County, Iowa
This must be one of the oldest burial grounds in Jefferson County. In CENTENNIAL EDITION, The Fairfield Daily Ledger, Monday, October 2, 1939, Section E, Page 2, appears a narrative of the life of Col. William Greyer Coop, from which we extract these statements:
“In November of 1837, Dave Coop, brother of Colonel Coop, passed away. This was the first death among the inhabitants of the county. There existed in the county no undertaker, no lumber yard, not even a board from which could be fashioned a rude coffin. In this difficulty, John R. Parsons, one of the later arrivals, knocked his wagon box to pieces and out of the pieces made a rough coffin. At the direction of Colonel Coop the dead man was buried close by a grove of ‘rugged elms’ on the north end of his property, and he at once set aside three acres about his brother’s grave for a free burial ground. This Cemetery is known now as Union Cemetery.
