I can shed a little light on the family traditions you tell in your enquiry. The part that I can tell you definitely concerns the contact in the 1920's or 30's. In the period up to 1882 a certain Major General Henry Ferrers Waddington did extensive work on collecting information on anyone with the surname Waddington. The information he collected seems to have passed to John Waddington who in the 1920's and 30's set about updating it, and in 1934 published a book called "Who's Who in the Family of Waddington". This book give essential information (date and place of birth, marriage, daeth etc) nearly 12,000 people with the surname of Waddington. I know that John Waddington contacted my grandfather in about 1930 although they were not related; so I suspect that he was contacting anyone he came across with the name. It would be nice if there were a Lord Waddington, but I regret to say I don't think there ever was. The book is very keen to mention any relationship with the aristocracy and there is no mention of a Lord Waddington in it. John Waddington may have been Lord of the Manor of Waddington. I have so far been unable to trace your family in the book. There is no Thomas marrying a Jane in York in 1811. There is a Thomas with a son called Francis who was married in 1811, but the marriage is said to be in Kirkby Malzeard and the name of the wife is quite different. If you can give me more names and dates I could look further. Patrick Waddington
