I had my father's DNA tested and am writing to encourage other Lewis males to have theirs tested.
Our last know relative is Robert T. Lewis (1828-1893)who first appears in Mathews County, Virginia, records in the 1850 census. Our best DNA match is to a person whose last name is Evans. His last known Evans ancestor is from Montgomeryshire Wales, born 1771. We are along genetic cousins of people with the last names Webb and Owens.
In the Ancestry.com database I found a Robert Lewis, b. 1828, a laborer from Wales who came to NY on the emigrant ship "Refuge." Coincidence?
Having my father's DNA tested saved me lots of research! We now have proof that we are not related to the more prominent Lewis families of early Virginia. Rather, we are descended from someone who probably emigrated from Wales with the masses who came to America seeking opportunity in the early 19th century.
I would like to see other Lewises add their DNA results to the Family Tree DNA (http://www.familytreedna.com/) database. You can get a discount by requesting a kit through the Lewis DNA Surname project. It will help us all move along on the genealogy journey!
Also, we are planning to go to Wales to visit areas where Lewis and other surname ancestors may have lived. If you have visited Wales and have advice, I would love to hear from you.
