Subjects were arrested, jailed, tried and found guilty in Ruthin Assizes, Denbighshire, N. Wales on 15 Mar 1833(Beware the Ides of March). See message 24631 (this forum for detail relating to William Williams, a ploughman [1805-1890]) Probablity his confederates received the same sentences - 14 years TRANSPORTATION, and off they went on the Convict ship, Isabella, to Van Dieman's Land. The mighty HU who lives forever, Of mead and wine to men the giver. The emperor of land and sea, And all the things that living be, Did hold a plough with his good hand, Soon as the Deluge left the land, To show to men both strong and weak, The haughty-hearted and the meek, Of all the arts the heaven below, The noblest is to guide the plough. Iolo Goch The story told to William's descendants advised William & friends were successful poachers on the Estate of Lord Dinorben. Too successful to the point that Lord Dinorben rallied his game keepers to stop the trespass. Subjects were said to have been sharing their largess with the widow of a friend who met accidental death. Dinorben offered a reward and the widow provided evidence that assisted in their arrest in January 1833. Unfortunately during the gamekeepers v. poacher affray injury resulted to gamekeeper, Edward Parry, a capital offence. The incident took place in the BIG WOOD near Lleweni Hall some 3 miles NE of Denbigh. Thomas Jones, Dinorben's head game keeper, investigated finding two gun stocks, a bag with 3 phesants, a hat and handkerchief. He later showed the handkerchief to ELIZABETH WILLIAMS and searched WILLIAM WILLIAMS' house finding a ramrod and shot in his waistcoat pocket. At the time of this incident William Williams (we think) was living in Denbigh Town with his wife Alice Parry leading to the assumption that William & Elizabeth Williams were probably the parents of William, the guilty poacher. I hope to prove the assumption but records back to 1833 are difficult to find. It is possible that William, Sr. & Elizabeth continued to live on the farm until the first census was taken in 1841 so I will follow that lead. Any census help or recommendation will certainly be appreciated. Make that skeleton in your closet dance. Jos. Williams Helena, MT USA Notify Administrator about this message?
