Searching Sideways: Washington, Lewis, McGehee, Halford

My name is Terrie Washington. I have a website at:
www.washington-family.us entitled, The Washington Family Genealogy Project.

I have been researching my oldest known Washington ancestor George Washington (b. 1821 VA d. 1869 Sarepta Cemetery, Calhoun Co, MS per cypress headstone) since 1999. He was a white man.

George first married "Jincey" Halford (as stated on their second son John C. Washington's death certificate in Pontotoc Co. MS.)
and had two surviving children with her: Francis Marion b. abt. 1839 and John C. b. 30 Dec. 1840. Jincey and 3rd baby Catharine were both dead by the end of 1844 because George married Mary Ann McEwen Jan. 1845 in Muscogee Co. GA and was enumerated in 1850 Wetumpka, Coosa Co. AL along with new wife Mary, John C. and Francis M.(male) of 1st marriage, and James Hirum (the first born of George's 2nd marriage).

Searching for George has been like looking for a needle in a haystack due to the numerous George Washingtons past and present :) so I ultimately have had to search sideways through other connected family members...

We have yet to learn of George's parents.
We have submitted two male descendents of said George to YDNA testing. The results have been rather interesting.

Although we have not matched to any other Washingtons (other than the two W cousins that match from my family) we have matched to 9 McGehee (McGee, Magee, McGhee, McGaw etc) families - which in turn has pointed me to some new information which I found to be very intriguing. BTW we have about 150 other YDNA matches, but no others as exact AND numerous as McGehee/McGee...which goes back through time to N. IR, Scotland, England, Wales and the British Isles.

Our YDNA points to the McGehee family and family research keeps pointing to the Betty Washington/McGehee tree(she was sister of president Washington). At this point we do not have enough information to connect any dots.

Well, that point in itself doesn't seem much, but my George's father-in-law John C. Halford's (b. 1787 SC d. ?) genealogy leads back and forth between Alabama and Mississippi. I note Betty Washington and Fielding Lewis were Early Alabama Settlers.

My research on John Halford leads from Simpson Co. MS to Warren Co. MS where he married Catharine BROWN, daugh. of James Brown about 1820, and then goes back to Simpson Co. MS and land purchases between 1820s-1830s...further back I find this John C. Halford coming from around Union District SC. I note a son of Halford, also named John C. Halford b. 1836 Union District SC who married Sarah Ann Costner in 1864 Calhoun Co. MS. They had a daughter named Minnie Lee Halford. This may be the same John ALFORD, possible son of J.C. Halford, who served 18th AL Inf. Co. "I" along with my George Washington's 1st son Francis Marion Washington who died in Corinth MS in camp of same company (also note an Isaiah Washington in same company who I presume to be the only one of the 3 to survive the Civil war from 18th Al Inf. Co. "I" after Battle of Shiloh). Isaiah was the son of Martin Washington.

Stepping back, by 1838-1841 Halford was living in Lee/Russell Co. AL (next door to my George W), they then took a land purchase trip to MS, Halford buying land in Jasper County and Washington buying land in Kemper County, then Halford and Washington moved to Wetumpka, Coosa Co. AL by 1850, then by 1854 Halford (Holford) was living in Calhoun Co. MS (in same hh as presumed grandson John C. Washington, son of my George and is my 2nd great-grandfather) this was where Halford buried his wife Catharine in Methodist Campground [Ragland] Cemetery located in Sarepta, Calhoun Co. MS which is behind Crestman home off of Hwy. 9.

"Other Close But Not Close Enough Info that Ponders"

1) In my research I found a John Washington b. 1806 SC living in 1850 (per census) in CHRISTIAN Household in Washington, Pontotoc Co. MS with 3 daughters all born in AL. My George's descendents settled in that community in 1870...this was after my George's death in 1869...

2) There was a Jincey Washington that was living in St. Clair AL, but would have been too old to be my Jincey Halford.

3) Why does the McKinney family have marriage relationships with 3 separate Washington families that are not known to be related? This is true for Washingtons who settled in Rome, Floyd Co. GA, Washingtons who settled in St. Clair Co. AL from SC, and my Washingtons who settled in first Lee/Russell/Coosa Cos. Alabama then moved to Calhoun/Pontotoc Co. MS.

4) Found a George Washington b. 1806 living in 1830 Harris Co. GA right across state line from Russell Co. AL and my George Washington living in 1840 Russell Co. AL. This particular George Washington b. 1806 was son of Thomas Washington of the St. Clair AL Washingtons. The St. Clair AL Washingtons were all from SC.

5) Who was Isaiah Washington 18th AL Inf. Co. I, son of Martin? Isaiah and Francis M. Washington were the only 2 Washingtons in the entire regiment - same company...would they be related?

6) Who was Amanda CONAWAY b. 1833 Newton?, GA enumerated in John C. HALFORD hh in 1850 Wetumpka, Coosa Co., AL along with son Benjamin F. CONAWAY age 1 ? Researcher Peggy Washington-Hall of the Rome, Floyd, GA Washington's said she believed that they were connected to the CONAWAY's of Floyd Co. GA. Peggy has since passed to a better place.

I hope this info may form a connection or perhaps help someone else in their Washington family connected research. One really can learn allot by searching sideways! The trouble is putting all the little pieces of the puzzle together to form a larger picture...

Happy Hunting!
