Mary Flood was a daughter of Col. John Flood and first wife, Margaret, widow of William Finche. Col.John Flood came on the "Swan" to Virginia in 1610 as a young boy of about age 10. His land is known as, "Sunken Marsh" on the SS of the James River, Surry Co., Va. Mary Flood, born c1635, had brothers, Thomas Flood and Walter Flood, who were active in the Surry County Militia. Mary was sent to England to be educated and returned to Virginia where she married Richard Blunt Sr. of Isle of Wight County, Va. and had a son, Thomas. After Richad Blunt died, Mary soon married Charles Ford in 1657 who died shortly after they married. On November 15, 1658 she married John Washington who arrived in Surry County from the Barbadoes, a merchant, baptized on March 14, 1631/2 at St. Martins In The Field Cathedral, Middlesex, London, son of Richard and Frances Browne Washington, son of William Washington older brother of Rev. Lawrence Washington. Mary Flood may have met John Washington when she was in school in England. John Washington and Mary Flood had a contract of marriage that he would see that her son, Thomas Blunt, would receive his inheritance from his father. John and Mary (Flood) Washington had one son, Richard, born c1660, when his father died, perhaps drowned at sea. Mary married 4th, Henry Briggs and they had several children. John Dykes"Dawkes" was the tutor for the children in the Briggs household. John Dykes' family came from Pepenbury, Kent Co., England, arriving in SS Virginia before 1618. Mary's father, Col. John Flood, married 2nd, Fortune Jordan, sister of Col. George Jordan, Burgess of Surry County. Col. Jordan married Alyce Miles who died in childbirth with their daughter, Fortune, then Fortune married Thomas Hunt and died in childbirth . Alyce Miles Jordan was buried on the Browne plantation at Three Mile Tree just east of Sunken Marsh. John Washington's land was west of Sunken Marsh where Clermont, Surry Co. is located today and ran south of there. Capt. William Swan brought Elizabeth Flood, dau of Richard Flood of York Co., Va. to Surry County where she married Thomas King (2) Nicholas Smith of Isle of Wight County, Va. Richard Flood might be a brother of Col. John Flood. (See: Professor Kornkoff of William & Mary's College, "Surry Co., Virginia", a native of Surry County). It is an old book and I just have copies of pages out of the book owned by a retired teacher in Dallas, Texas, a descendant of the Flood and Smith families of Surry County and Isle of Wight County, Va.
