John Washington of Surry Co. VA is my great x 8 grand father. According to my grandfather's 1975 membership application to the National Sociey of Washington Family Descendants, John Washington of Surry was born in 1623. When I requested a copy of my grandfather's application I was told that the Society no longer accepts descendants of John Washington of Surry because it is not possible that he is the son of Sir John Washington of Thrapston. According to an article published, "The Problem of The Surry County Washingtons", which the Society was kind to send to me,there is no record of John Washington of Surry except for the marriage contract with Mary Flood in 1658. This article is quiet the let down; it states that there is no evidence, thus no reason to believe, that John Washington of Surry is the son of Sir John Washington. The article concludes that Surry Co. descendants were "misled into believing that their family was related to George Washington's family". So this is my brick wall for this ancestor; any information would be greatly appreciated.
