I have been told my great-grandfather Capt. William Ramsey was a friend and neighbor of George Washington. My mother says he spoke of Washington often. Someone told me recently in an email that she had read that William Ramsey and his brother served as Washington's guards (I assume she meant bodyguards). I do know that he was with George Washington at Yorktown. William Ramsey was apparently born in 1741, later took up with Daniel Boone and and his family (along with the family of William Ramsey's son Robert)and moved to Missouri---around 1800 or so. On May 20, 1815, Robert Ramsey's family was attacked at La Charrette by Indians. Lewis and Clark had come through a few years before heading west---their journal says there were only 7 families there then. Several Ramsey family members were killed in the 1815 attack (the story has been passed down orally in my family almost 200 years now). Daniel Boone came over and cut an Indian bullet out of Robert. William Ramsey died in Missouri in 1845 (remarkable that he lived to be 104, considering his experiences). He was also a veteran of many Indian battles. He was apparently with Capt. James Callaway when James was ambushed by Indians and killed at Louter Creek in March 1815. James was the son of Flanders Callaway and Jemima Boone, Daniel's daughter, who had famously been kidnapped with two Callaway girls and rescued by Daniel Boone and a party of men in Kentucky several years earlier. William Ramsey supposedly built Daniel Boone's coffin for him. I would appreciate any information any of you might have about this William Ramsey or his family and his relationship with the Washingtons. Thanks. Bob
