The reference to Dunbar and Gospatric at www.AncestryUK.com/WashingtonAncestry.htm is sourced from a booklet called "The Washington Family in Britain" by Margot Johnson (Durham University-retired) Price £2.50 + £1.00 p&P I was recently showing descendents of the Washingtons of Surry (note spelling)County, Virginia around Washington Old Hall in the "Original" Washington, England who confirmed that DNA testing carried out amongst descendents of Richard Washington, recorded in Charles Cittee County in Virginia in 1639 (17 years before George Washington's Ancestors) have shown that they are descendents of the Washingtons of Westmoreland, England. Robert de Wessyngton I married Joan de Strickland of Sizergh Castle in Westmoreland (now Cumbria) in 1292 A.D. He was the son of Sir William de Wessyngton III who married Margaret de Morville of Helton Fleckett in the Barony of Appleby in Westmoreland (now known as Helton, Cumbria) Sir William de Wessyngton III was a direct descendent of William de Wessyngton, son of the Berwickshire theign Sir Patric of the Hirsell (Coldstream on the north banks of the Tweed, which will lead you back to Dunbar.
