Pamela, As we are distant, distant cousins, I have a perhaps a little info for you. Gen. Joe's plantation is located in northern Alabama west of Huntsville. We stopped by there a couple of years ago and the state is in the process of restoring the buildings. It was (is) a working plantation, not a fancy one like Tara. There are a lot of Wheeler places in that area. At the capitol building in Washington D.C. there is that area where every state has a statue of one of its favorite sons. Gen. Joe is there for Alabama. It is also my understanding that he was the only Confederate general that was asked to join the Union forces after the Civil War. When the Spanish/American war took place, Teddy Roosvelt ask Gen. Joe to return the the Army and he lead the forces up San Juan Hill. Hope some of this is useful. I have been researching my line for several years. If you would like any thing additional, let me know. Bill Wheeler Sun City Center, FL Notify Administrator about this message?
