Batavia (Illinois) Herald, 13 Jan. 1898 Sudden Death of Jos. H. Whipple Fri., Jan. 7, '98, Aged 83 years. A Highly Respected Resident, of Batavia for 52 Years. Held Various Co. Offices Of Note, During His Earlier Life. ---- The residents of Batavia were greatly surprised, last Friday noon, Jan. 7, '98 to learn of the sudden death of Joseph Whipple, and at first it seemed as if it could not be true, as he was upon the streets only the day before, apparently in the best of health. But alas, it proved to be only too true. He was taken suddenly and seriously ill, thursday evening, with intestinal trouble, caused by a severe rupture received years ago. Physicians were summoned and gave it as their opinion that the patient could not life without submitting to an operation, which was performs, but he never rallied, and passed away the followig morning at 11:57 a.m. Deceased was born in Otsego Co. N.Y. December 12, 1815, and march 1st, 1840 was married to Miss Mary A. Durkee. One child, David M. was born to them, who passed away in 1866. Mr. Whipple came to Illinois in June 1846 and located in Batavia and for several years followed teaming and threshing. In 1848 he was elected constable and held the office for a number of years. He served as deputy sheriff for two years; after which he was elected sheriff, holding the office from 1863 to 1865 and later was county jailer. He was at one time engaged in the grist, plaining and saw mill business and was interested in the different stone quarries. Deceased was a very active and useful man, one honored and esteemed by all and will be greatly missed. He leaves his aged wife, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Ogden Williams, besids a large circle of friends. ------- I am not related to nor researching this family and have no further information.
