Thomas Williams, Bilston & Mexborough, 1881-1902

I have a Thomas Williams in the 1871 census, living at Aston, Yorkshire as lodger with the Prince family, including 16 year old Catherine Prince. He was born in West Bromwich, Staffs, in 1852

Thomas and Catherine were living together as man and wife in the 1881 census, but I can't find a marriage for them - shortly after 1871 if there was one. They were living in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, and were enumerated in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census as Williams, but many of their children's births were registered as Causer - why??

Thomas died in 1902, and Catherine and several children emigrated to America in 1904 as Causer, and were living in Kirkville, Adair County, MO in the 1910 census. Any clues to this family would be invaluable.
