James West Jr., 88, St. Joseph, Mo., died Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at a local health care facility. Mr. West was born November 6, 1918, in Shubert, Neb. He married Hazel M. West, December 3, 1940, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, James Newton and Lillie Belle (Wolf) West; four sisters, Martha Wisecup, Pauline Rogers, Patricia West and Lily Blevins; two brothers, John and Ralph West; two son-in-law's, Roger Long and Bob Griswold; and one grandson, Chris Griswold. Mr. West was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Navy. He worked 35 years for Swift Co. Survivors: seven daughters, Mary Rose Gray, Norma Brown (John), Joann Hall, Alice Coats (Joe), all of St. Joseph, Susan Long of Mound City, Mo., Carol Clark of St. Joseph, and Margie Cowley (Dave) of Horton, Kan.; two sons, James West (Mary), and Marvin West (Peggy), both of St. Joseph; sister, Mabel Rue of Tablerock, Neb.; brother, Royal "Gene" West (Bonnie) of Falls City, Neb.; 26 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Mr. West was a member of the American Legion, Falls City, and a formal member of the VFW, Humboldt, Neb. Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Mount Olivet Cemetery. The Family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, where friends may call after 5 p.m. Thursday.
