In Reply to: Nicholas Worthington References by Richard Worthington of 1950

Dear Richard,

In the last few days, I have been going through the records of St. Wilfrid's Church, Standish - to ascertain, amongst other things, whether there is any trace of a Nicholas Worthington being baptised there in 1613 ... and being a son of Thomas Worthington of Worthington by his wife Isabel, daughter of Gilbert Langtree of Langtree. I am afraid there are NO such references!Their first son was William, baptised on 13 April 1597; their second son was Edward, baptised on 19 March 1597-8, but he was buried 2 days later; their third son was John, baptised on 6 May 1599. They had a daughter,Anna, baptised on 21 May 1595 ... but she was also buried the same day. They had another daughter called Anna, who was baptised on 8 June 1602, but she was buried on 18 February 1612-3. A third daughter was called Margaret: she was baptised on 1 April 1602 - for some reason, the baptismal record calls her "fa [of] Thome Worthingto gen: et Agnet:" - and she was buried on 13 April 1620. Thus the only thee children who were still alive in 1613, when Richard St. George, Norroy King of Arms, made his visitation to Lancashire were William, John and Margaret ... as shown in Richard St. George's pedigree (and as reproduced in THE WORTHINGTON FAMILIES OF MEDIEVAL ENGLAND on page 68). NO NICHOLAS WORTHINGTONS WERE BAPTISED AT STANDISH CHURCH BETWEEN 4 SEPTEMBER 1585 (when 'Nichus Worthington, f. Rogeri et Margar' was baptised) AND AT LEAST 3 JANUARY 1656 (the latest date I worked up to). Thus claims made on several American websites that Nicholas, son of Thomas and Isabel Worthington, was baptised in December 1613 are totally false. Likewise, Nicholas could NOT have become Lord of the Manor of Worthington at any time, since Thomas Worthington was not buried until 8 March 1631-2 (Isabel having been interred on 5 May 1631), John being buried on 8 December 1667 ... and his brother William on 7 January 1667-8.

William and his wife Margaret had a daughter, Isabella, baptised at Standish Church on 26 April 1624 ... but who their other children were (and where they were baptised) I have not yet discovered. A Margaret Worthington of Worthington was buried on 22 February 1682-4: perhaps she was another of William and Mary's children.

The Worthington estate was sold in 1690 by Edward Worthington, who was married to Jane ... - but I have not yet found any references at all relating to them!

It is possible that some - if not all - of the information is missing, because certain baptisms/marriages/burials took place at the [Roman Catholic] chapel of the Blainscough Worthingtons.

So we are STILL left with the question 'Who was Nicholas Worthington, and into which branch of the family was he born?'!!

Kindest regards.

Stuart Worthington
