Our family records show James Samuel Worthington christened 8 March 1812 in St. Michaels, Macclesfield, Cheshire England. He had older siblings Sarah (1795), William (1797), John (1799), and Elizabeth (1802). There may have been others. his parents were Thomas Worthington (22 Aug 1771) and Ellen Moors. Thomas' father was Thomas Worthington (23 Sep 1745) and his father was John Worthington (17 Oct 1708). After a long search by professional genealogists (Price & Associates), myself, and several other family members, we concluded that this James Worthington is the father of Mary Worthington (7 feb 1850) primarily because we have established him living four doors away from her mother Eliza Ann Clarke at the time of Mary's conception and birth. James was married to Sarah (lnu) for at least 11 years prior to his relationship with Eliza Ann Clarke. They had at least one daughter, Mary (born about 1839), and both were still alive and living in Lancashire in 1881. Our family also has the tradition that James was connected to the silk weaving industry, but we have not been able to confirm this. We have not found him to date in earlier census data. During our research, we found and rejected several other James Worthingtons as the possible father of Mary including James Worthington of Rathbone & Worthington Co. This was a merchant company based in Liverpool in the 1840's and 1850's. It imported silk and tea from China and James Worthington made several trips to China during that period. He is the only person connected with silk that we have been able to locate who could have been Mary's father. We concluded, after analysis of his travels, that he was not because he could not have been in Macclesfield, where Mary was presumably conceived, at the time of her conception. He may be related to the James Macclesfield who was Mary's father, but this is not established. Please tell me about the source of your information about James Samuel Worhtington and your reasons for concluding that he is Mary's father. If you think the James Worthington described above is Mary's father, I'll be happy to send you the rest of the pedigree information on his ancestors and siblings that I have.
