4th Air Depot Group, 5th Air Force

My dad, James S. Benefield, served in the 4th Air Depot Group of the 5th Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater. He was transported on the USS President Johnson troop ship to Townsville, Australia, after a long voyage of about 37 days. He went to Finschaven, New Guinea, Lae, and Leyte. Because of his gunnery and radio education, the 5th AF would "borrow" him on bombing missions. On one occasion (I have no date, but think it was 1944), the plane went down on the beach at Leyte. My dad was wounded and lost a finger and when he came to he was on a jeep being taken to the medics.

I really need some more details about his service and would love to find out about that plane crash - he never knew if there were any survivors. I'm trying to find someone who might have known my dad and/or someone who is doing research on the 5th AF. Thanks for any help,

Melissa
