A huge number of merchant seamen died during WWII but they were considered civilians and their records were kept by their union which handed out the assignments.
Somebody has those records but not the military archives.
I would google up NARA (National Archives)to see if they have them. The Merchant Marine was a very important part of our WWII activities and it's records would have historical importance.
