Hi, we are working with our home ass. (www.heimatverein-datterode.de - partly already in English) on an incident on April 3rd 1945. Any help would be great! Here is the information:
“In the wake of the fights close to the end of World War II on April, 3rd 1945 (Easter Sunday) the first U.S. troops show up on the major road of the village of Datterode (Leipziger Street) (look at: www.super6th.org603tdindex.html and www.lonesentry.comccompanyindex.html). From the street crossing “Kulleich/Leipziger Street” two German soldiers, while fleeing into the forests, were shot dead. In our event archive 2005, you can read the story. One reason that the fleeing soldiers were shot, perhaps could be an incident at Mitterode (near of the city of Sontra) earlier in the night when a guard standing U.S. soldier of the 259th Infantry Regiment of the 65th Infantry Division was ambushed and found dead in a fox hole (look at: www.uiaa.orgurbanaveteransdisplay_veteran.asp?veteranID941). According to the sources on the path of the raiders’ troops (on April 3rd the “Task Force 50”) shot at all to the mountains and forests fleeing German soldiers.”
Those two mentioned soldiers were burried on our local cemetery. One was salvaged a few days later and brought with a horse cart to the Rhine area (british zone). The other remained in his grave and another soldiers who had died in a hospital nearby was burried in that grave aswell.
We are looking for any information about this incident and of course for the name of the dead soldier who was salvaged. All other tries in nearly all cities around the Rhine river brought no success. Maybe we can find sources of the so called “Task Force 50” on April, 3rd 1945 (main road was the “Reichstraße 7” – the next fights were at the Creuzburg area and at the area called “Struth” – maybe on the way to Nordhausen).
