Does any one know what happened to the descendents of John W. York? According to a quote by Rev. Jerome C. "A Circuit Rider's Frontier Experiences." 16 (1925): 177-226. Memoir, completed in 1868, covering ministry in Missouri, Arkansas, and at Shawnee Mission in Kansas (1840s). "Very shortly after my arrival in Missouri, a camp meeting was held in what was called new Tennessee, Ste. Geneieve Co. I attended in company with my brother Josias -- where I first met Rev. John W. York, who was then pastor of Saline and St. Francois circuits. That fall he was married to Miss Mary Collied near Fredericktown. They moved to Illinois; in after years went to Oregon . . ." John W. York was listed in the 1840 census for Clinton Co. IL with a wife, one son under 5 and three daughters. In the 1850 Census for Clinton Co. IL, John W. York b. 13 Sep 1801 in GA is found with wife Parmelia Ann b. 7 Sep 1812 Vermont. In 1850, his daughters Martha (19), Ann (17) and Emily (15) lived with him and his wife Parmelia but no son was listed. Since John and Parmelia married 21 Jan 1847 in [city], Marion, Illinois, USA, Parmelia must not have been the mother of his children. In 1843 Nancy Barrett of MO married a John W. York of St. Clair Co. IL, which is adjacent to Clinton Co. on the west side boardering MO. Since no other John Yorks are listed in IL census data for 1840 and 1850 in that area of IL, it is likely the Rev. John W. York's first wife Mary Collied had died in the early 1840s and the widower married Nancy Barrett, the daughter of his old friend Dr. Beverly A. Barrett who was born in Ste. Genevieve Co. MO. Poor Nancy died about a year later. The widower York married a third time in 1847 to Parmelia who probably survived due the fact that she bore no children. Rev. York's son probably died when either his own mother Mary or his step mother Nancy died due to some illness which probably took them both. In 1870 and 1880 Census Parmelia and John York were in Benton Co. OR. He was a Clergyman/Minister. He died 19 Feb 1884 in Corvalis, Benton, OR and she, 17 Dec 1880. Two or three of his daughters migrated to OR with the couple as three females were listed in his household in an 1854 census. Pioneers of Benton County Oregon Notify Administrator about this message?
