I guess it is possible that your John W. York may be a nephew or cousin to the John W. York born in 1800. At least now I know who the parents of the 1800 John W. York were. You might look for a connection between your John W. York and the father of the 1800 John W. York.

I looked up the biosketch of John W. York (b. 1800 GA) at Heritage Quest like Karran Amaro suggested and found that 1800 John W. York was born in Jackson Co. GA near Raleigh to parents James and Aletha York. When John was abt a year old his parents moved to St. Louis, MO, where his father died. Aletha remarried and she and her new husband moved their family to KY. In 1826 John W. York obtained a license to preach the Methodist Episcopal faith and was given a circuit in MO. It took eight weeks for him to visit all of the congregations in his circuit.

In 1826 he married Mary P. Collier who was born in 1812 in KY. They moved to IL and had eight children. Unfortunately all but three girls died in infancy or early childhood. In 1842 Mary also died and about a year later John married Nancy S. Barrett, daughter of "Judge" Barrett. (In my earlier post I said Nancy was the daughter of Dr. Beverly Allen Barrett. That was incorrect. Nancy was the sister of Dr. Beverly A. Barrett and the daughter of John S. and Margaret Patterson Barrett.) According to the biosketch of John W. York, Nancy died of cholera only 10 months after she married John. John then married Mrs. Parmelia Ann Bush Quinton (a widow I presume). Parmelia became sickly and John York moved his family to Oregon by wagon train in 1852 in hopes the climate there would be better for his wife Parmelia's health. Her health did improve and she lived another 26-7 years.

John's eldest daughter Martha Cordelia York married William Masters in 1860 and they had two children William York Masters and Francis K. Masters. John's daughter Ann Aletha York married Rev. G. C. Belknap and they raised three children Charles, Mary and Rosa in CA. John's daughter Emily York married A. W. Moore of WA and they had a daughter Mary.

The complete biosketch of John W. York can be found at the HeritageQuest website, often accessible for free at local libraries. The biosketch was printed on pp 274-5 in a book by an unknown arthor titled "Portrait and biographical record of Portland and vicinity, Oregon : containing original sketches of many well known citizens of the past and present."
Chicago: Chapman Pub. Co., 1903, 890 pgs.
