Meckesheim, the home of the Zimmermans, is located in the area called the Northern Kraichgau. The Kraichgau is a hilly region in Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany. It is bordered by the Odenwald and the Neckar River to the North, the Black Forest to the South, and the Upper Rhine River Plains to the West. To the east, its boundary is considered to be Stromberg, Hardt, and Heuchelberg. The largest cities of the Kraichgau are Sinsheim, Eppingen, and Bretten. On the western end of the Kraichgau lies the city of Bruchsal, which is the portal into the Rhineland plains.
The Thirty Years’ War (the Anti-Reformation, 1618-1648) caused the “devastating demolition of many towns and the death of many people.” Almost all the church records were destroyed and many towns were totally depopulated. This gap in population was “surprisingly rapidly filled by immigrants from other areas of Germany, but especially from over-populated Switzerland.”
Some people say that Andreas was born in Reichenbach, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. Again, it will have to be determined if this is our Andreas or another with the same name. Our Andreas landed in Philadelphia on Sept. 18, 1727 with Johann Andreas Hill of Mannheim-Sandhofen. He and his family came on the ship “William and Sarah;” William Hill,was the Commander. The ship was originally from Rotterdam in the Netherlands, but came to America directly from Dover, England. The Andreas Zimmerman emigration party included 8 people, plus son, Hans Michael. Rev. Weiss, who was also on the boat, established the Old Goshenhoppen Reformed Church with help from Andreas Zimmerman, Hans Michael, and possibly a brother, George, in Pennsylvania.
It is said by some that Andreas is buried in Jacob’s Cemetery in Pine Grove, Schuylkill Co., PA in ID 681, Row 12. However, I find it hard to believe that he would move to another town while many of his children are still back in Goshenhoppen. More research needs to be done on this.

Susanna Zimmermann, Michaels sister and my ancestor, was the sponsor for the birth of his son, Johann Michael, in 1732. Michael and George Zimmerman received land warrents for 333 acres on the Lehigh-Montgomery County Line in 1733, 1738, and 1741 (Hosensack Valley), which were then sold to John Roeder in 1787.
Michael made out a will on Feb. 8, 1741 in which it was stated that he had “lost all hopes of getting his health again.” Guardians of his wife and children were Bernhart Doderer and brother, George Zimmerman.

In 1737, Elisabetha Zimmerman was a witness at the baptism of Elisabeth, child of Hanes Magg and Margreth. Since the child was named after Elisabetha Zimmerman, I am guessing that Margreth was Elisabetha’s sister.

Came to America from Mutterstadt in 1724 and settled in the Goshenhoppen area of Upper Hanover Twp. He is listed as one of the first 20 members of the the New Goshenhoppen Church, which he and his family attended from 1736-1739. In 1740, he became a deacon in the Falkner Swamp Church, where he served until 1744. He was naturalized on September 24, 1741. He purchased 200 acres from John Mack (his brother-in-law), Dec. 15, 1754 in Upper Hanover, Montgomery Co., PA.
